Bitcoin retreats as ETF flows swing, while Solana upgrades and stablecoin rules advance.

🌍 Cryptos at a Glance
Crypto markets struggled to hold an early-week rebound, with Bitcoin briefly approaching $85,000 before falling back towards $80,000 as ETF flows reversed and broader risk sentiment weakened. Ethereum and Solana also finished lower, while Zcash remained one of the more resilient major tokens.
Beyond price action, the week brought several important developments in market infrastructure. Solana activated its Alpenglow consensus upgrade, US regulators finalised key rules implementing the GENIUS Act, and institutional adoption continued across tokenised funds, custody and digital deposits. Meanwhile, the push to tokenise traditional equities met increasingly visible resistance from major listed companies.
📊 Key Market Levels
- Bitcoin (BTC): ~$80,300, ~-2% over 7D. BTC briefly climbed towards $85,000 midweek before reversing and testing $80,000 again over the weekend.
- Ethereum (ETH): ~$2,330, ~-3% over 7D. ETH participated in the early-week recovery but subsequently fell back towards $2,300.
- Solana (SOL): ~$101, ~-3% over 7D. SOL remained under pressure despite the successful activation of its Alpenglow consensus upgrade.
- Hyperliquid (HYPE): ~$77, ~-4% over 7D. HYPE extended its October correction, falling back towards the mid-$70s.
- Zcash (ZEC): ~$1,230, ~+7% over 7D. ZEC remained exceptionally volatile but was one of the few large crypto assets to finish the week higher.
🌐 Macro Overview
- Oil became one of the week's biggest macro stories. Brent surged above $117 per barrel on Friday amid heightened Middle East supply concerns, before retreating towards $114 on Monday as hopes of de-escalation emerged. The renewed rise in energy prices adds further uncertainty to the inflation and rates outlook.
- Gold suffered a sharp reversal, falling from above $4,150 to briefly below $4,000 before recovering towards $4,015 on Monday. Rising real yields weighed on the metal, with gold recording its largest weekly decline since June.
- Markets are now focused on Wednesday's Fed decision. The Fed is widely expected to leave rates unchanged, but persistent inflation and higher energy prices have kept expectations of another hike later this year alive.
- France's fiscal crisis is becoming a broader eurozone concern. French 10-year yields briefly rose above 5%, their highest since 2002, while the spread over German Bunds reached levels not seen since the 2011 eurozone debt crisis. Political deadlock over the 2027 budget and concerns over France's ability to stabilise its public finances have begun to spill into other European sovereign debt markets, putting the ECB increasingly in focus.
🪙 Project & Token Highlights
- Solana activated Alpenglow on mainnet on 21 October, replacing TowerBFT with its new Votor consensus mechanism. The upgrade targets transaction finality of roughly 150 milliseconds, down from around 12.8 seconds previously, one of the most significant changes to Solana's architecture since launch.
- Ethereum postponed the Glamsterdam upgrade on its Hoodi testnet after ChainSecurity identified security issues linked to proposed gas changes. Developers have not yet announced a replacement activation date.
- Zcash continued to stand out from the broader crypto market, gaining around 7% over the week despite significant intraday volatility and a wider decline across major crypto assets.
- Dogecoin Labs was launched alongside the Dogecoin Foundation to consolidate development teams, products and intellectual property around DOGE and expand its potential uses beyond the meme-coin market.
🔐 Security & Incidents
- CoinDCX confirmed a $15.99 million loss linked to wallet infrastructure compromised in its 2025 breach. An automated sweeping service failed, allowing user deposits to accumulate in supposedly retired wallets before the funds were taken. CoinDCX said it absorbed the loss and that customer balances, active wallets and trading systems were unaffected. The disclosure came days after CEO Sumit Gupta initially described reports of a new breach as a “false alarm.”
- Tether froze around $2.2 million in USDT linked to the CoinDCX outflows, according to blockchain analytics firm AMLBot, illustrating again the role stablecoin issuers can play in containing stolen funds after an incident.
- Wallets linked to the $295 million Drift Protocol exploit moved around $61.6 million in ETH through Tornado Cash. Some 25,700 ETH were transferred into the mixer on 20 October after the addresses had remained largely dormant for roughly two months.
🏛️ Regulatory Updates
- The OCC finalised rules implementing the GENIUS Act, establishing requirements around reserves, redemptions, risk management, custody and supervision for stablecoin issuers under its jurisdiction. The rules are scheduled to take effect on 18 January 2027.
- France moved towards taxing crypto-to-stablecoin conversions. Lawmakers backed an amendment to the 2027 budget that would make swaps from cryptocurrencies into stablecoins taxable events, passing the measure by just one vote.
- UK banks are facing growing criticism over restrictions on crypto payments. More than 10,000 complaints about blocked or restricted transfers to crypto exchanges were recorded over a 90-day period, including transfers to FCA-registered platforms.
- The SEC highlighted tokenisation and advanced AI among emerging risks in its FY2027 examination priorities, reflecting growing regulatory attention as both technologies become more embedded in financial markets.
🏢 Institutional Developments
- Bitcoin ETF flows staged a recovery before reversing sharply. US spot ETFs attracted roughly $1.07 billion over three sessions from Monday to Wednesday, temporarily turning October flows positive, before $635.6 million left the funds on Thursday. Despite the late-week reversal, ETFs ultimately snapped a two-week losing streak.
- J.P. Morgan Asset Management included Bitcoin in its long-term capital-market assumptions for the first time, forecasting a 10% annualised return over the next 10–15 years, above its projections for US equities, real estate and gold.
- Switzerland approved its first retail fund investing directly in Bitcoin. FINMA classified the product as an alternative investment fund and granted exemptions from standard diversification requirements.
- SoFi launched a bank-issued tokenised deposit for consumers. SOFIE represents dollar deposits at SoFi Bank, offers a 4.4% yield and can be converted into a stablecoin, combining regulated bank deposits with blockchain-based settlement.
- Tokenised equities are meeting increasingly organised resistance from issuers. Microsoft, Alphabet and Goldman Sachs were among companies objecting to their shares being traded on the planned OKXICE tokenised-stock venue, with Wells Fargo, Cisco, Arm, Moderna and others subsequently joining them. By Friday, 22 companies had objected.
📆 What to Watch Next Week
- Central banks take centre stage: the Fed and Bank of Canada meet on Wednesday, followed by the ECB on Thursday and Bank of Japan on Friday. Beyond inflation and rates, the ECB will face growing scrutiny over France, where sharply higher borrowing costs and political deadlock have revived concerns over fragmentation in eurozone sovereign debt markets.
- UK Budget, 28 October: the government presents its Autumn Budget on Wednesday, with markets focused on the fiscal outlook and the reaction across sterling and gilts.
- Eurozone growth and inflation: preliminary Q3 GDP and national inflation releases will provide a fresh read on European growth and the impact of higher energy prices.
- US growth and inflation: economic data following Wednesday's Fed decision will provide another test of the outlook for rates and risk assets.
