Crypto sells off as oil and yields rise, while institutional onchain adoption keeps advancing.

🌍 Cryptos at a Glance
Crypto markets came under pressure this week as surging oil prices, rising US Treasury yields and renewed geopolitical tensions drove investors towards a more defensive stance. Bitcoin briefly fell towards $80,000 and a sharp deleveraging event wiped out around $1 billion in leveraged positions, while US crypto ETFs recorded sizeable outflows.
Yet beneath the market volatility, institutional and real-world adoption continued to advance. Solana introduced an institutional settlement framework developed with input from J.P. Morgan, Securitize brought tokenised US equities onchain, and Samsung announced USDC transfers over Solana for US Galaxy users. Meanwhile, Zcash continued to outperform the broader crypto market.
📊 Key Market Levels
- Bitcoin (BTC): ~$83,300, -2.9% over 7D. BTC fell from around $86,000 and briefly touched $80,427 during the week's sell-off before recovering above $83,000. Pasted text
- Ethereum (ETH): ~$2,541. ETH fell sharply below $2,500 during the week's deleveraging before recovering towards $2,540.
- Solana (SOL): ~$111. SOL retreated from above $120 earlier in the week before recovering from lows around $106.
- BNB: ~$749. BNB proved comparatively resilient, recovering from a sharp drop towards $720 during the broader sell-off.
- Hyperliquid (HYPE): ~$85.8. HYPE gave back some of its early-October gains but remained above its mid-September levels.
- Zcash (ZEC): ~$1,299. ZEC was the standout relative performer among the assets tracked, recovering strongly from the broader market sell-off and remaining up substantially over the past month.
🌐 Macro Overview
- Oil returned to the centre of the macro picture. Brent crude climbed above $100 as geopolitical tensions and concerns over Middle Eastern supply intensified, reaching around $106 by Monday. Higher energy prices renewed inflation concerns and contributed to the week's risk-off move across crypto markets.
- Treasury yields remained elevated. Higher energy prices reinforced concerns that inflation could remain persistent, with the US 10-year yield around 5.2%, close to its highest level in more than two decades.
- Crypto leverage amplified the sell-off. Around $969 million of crypto positions were liquidated over 24 hours during the initial drop below $83,000, including more than $644 million in longs.
- The dollar strengthened, adding another headwind for risk assets and gold. Gold traded around $4,172, while the dollar approached an 18-month high ahead of this week's US inflation data.
🪙 Project & Token Highlights
- Samsung is bringing USDC transfers to Galaxy devices. Samsung Wallet will enable US users to make cross-border USDC transfers over Solana from late October, with the service available across 82 million US Galaxy devices at launch and integrated fiat on- and off-ramps.
- Ethereum tested a substantial increase in network capacity. The Sepolia testnet activated the Glamsterdam upgrade on 6 October and began producing blocks with a gas limit close to 200 million, more than three times Ethereum mainnet's current 60 million limit.
- Zcash continued to outperform the broader market. ZEC recovered rapidly following the week's market-wide sell-off, returning towards $1,300 and remaining one of the strongest-performing major crypto assets over the past month.
- Solana DeFi consolidation continued, with decentralised exchange Orca and lending protocol Loopscale announcing a merger under a new company, Formation.
🏛️ Regulatory Updates
- The CFTC took another step towards a dedicated US crypto-market framework. The Commission opened consultation on new rules for retail crypto commodity transactions, aiming to incorporate them into a unified national regulatory framework with clearer market and consumer protections.
- The UK expanded its use of crypto-related sanctions. The government sanctioned three crypto exchanges and two payment platforms suspected of facilitating Russian sanctions evasion, including Cryptomus and TokenSpot.
🏢 Institutional Developments
- Crypto ETF flows reversed sharply. US spot Bitcoin ETFs recorded their largest daily outflow since June on Wednesday, losing $484.9 million in a single session. BlackRock's IBIT accounted for $207.7 million and Fidelity's FBTC $105.1 million. Bitcoin ETFs ultimately recorded more than $600 million of outflows over the week.
- The weakness extended beyond Bitcoin. Bitcoin, Ethereum and Solana ETFs all moved into negative net flows for October, pointing to a broader cooling in institutional crypto demand rather than a BTC-specific move.
- Solana launched an institutional delivery-versus-payment framework. Solana DvP is an open-source programme designed to allow institutions to settle trades onchain in seconds rather than days, with J.P. Morgan providing input into its development.
- Securitize brought major US equities onchain. Its new Securitize Stocks product launched tokenised versions of 12 US-listed companies, including Apple, Microsoft, Nvidia, Amazon, Meta and Tesla, backed 1:1 by underlying shares and initially available on Solana.
- Tokenised equities are attracting genuine demand, according to the IMF, although the emerging market remains comparatively volatile and illiquid.
📆 What to Watch Next Week
- US inflation takes centre stage. September CPI is due Wednesday, followed by PPI on Thursday. Markets will be watching closely for the impact of higher energy prices and what the data could mean for the Fed's next move.
- US consumption and activity: retail sales are due Thursday, alongside further economic data that should provide a clearer picture of how higher rates are feeding through to the economy.
- UK and China data: UK GDP, industrial production and trade figures are due, while China's trade and inflation releases will provide another read on global demand.
