Portofino Mint - 31 August 2026

Equity Perpetuals Take Off on Crypto Exchanges

🚀 Welcome to the Portofino Mint!

🌍 Cryptos at a Glance

Crypto markets consolidated after the previous week's sharp rally, with Bitcoin briefly crossing $81,000 before ending August around $78,000. Ethereum held above $2,400, while Solana, Hyperliquid and Zcash remained among the month's strongest performers.

Institutional adoption continued to gather pace, with further corporate Bitcoin and Ether purchases and new initiatives from banks, brokers and fintechs. Meanwhile, equity perpetuals continued to gain traction across crypto exchanges, extending crypto-native trading infrastructure into traditional markets.

📊 Key Market Levels

  • Bitcoin (BTC): $77,923, ~+1% 1W. Bitcoin briefly traded above $81,000 before ending the week around $78,000, consolidating most of the previous week's gains.
  • Ethereum (ETH): $2,445, ~+2% 1W. ETH traded relatively steadily above $2,400 after its strong mid-August repricing.
  • Solana (SOL): $102.49, ~+5% 1W. SOL remained one of the strongest major tokens and finished the week above $100.
  • BNB: $685.97, ~-2% 1W. BNB eased back below $700 after a strong first three weeks of August.
  • Hyperliquid (HYPE): $80.93, ~+2% 1W. HYPE reached a fresh all-time high above $86 before retracing towards $81.
  • Zcash (ZEC): $822.89, ~+3% 1W. ZEC consolidated close to its recent highs following its exceptional August rally.
  • Gold: $4,422, ~-5% 1W. Gold reversed sharply from a three-month high above $4,690 reached earlier in the week.
  • Brent crude: $90.60, ~+2% 1W. Brent finished August back above $90 after a volatile week.

🪙 Macro Overview

  • Jackson Hole turned hawkish. Fed Chair Kevin Warsh warned that inflation remains too high and declined to signal easier policy ahead. Market pricing for a September rate increase jumped from roughly 35% before the speech to around 60%.
  • US-Iran tensions returned to the market. US strikes against Iranian positions around the Strait of Hormuz and subsequent Iranian retaliation pushed Brent above $90 and revived concerns that higher energy prices could complicate the Fed's inflation fight.
  • Gold reversed sharply but remained one of August's strongest macro trades. Spot gold fell around 3% on Friday following Warsh's speech, yet remained up more than 10% for the month.
  • Nvidia delivered another record quarter, reporting $96.2 billion in quarterly revenue, above consensus expectations, as AI infrastructure spending continued to underpin risk markets.

🌐 Project & Token Highlights

  • Solana's first binding governance vote approved faster disinflation, doubling the pace at which SOL issuance declines.
  • Cronos halted its network following an exploit of Tectonic estimated at around $75 million, one of the largest DeFi exploits reported this week.
  • StarkWare completed the first experimental quantum-safe Bitcoin transaction on mainnet, testing a method designed to protect BTC against future quantum attacks without changing Bitcoin's consensus rules.
  • Ethereum developers proposed redesigning the validator deposit contract to make Ethereum's staking infrastructure compatible with future post-quantum cryptography.

🏛️ Regulatory Updates

  • The UK government moved to give the Bank of England a new secondary objective to support innovation in payments and digital money, including stablecoins, while maintaining financial stability as its primary mandate.
  • The BIS pushed back against stablecoins as a mainstream means of payment. General Manager Pablo Hernández de Cos argued that stablecoins lack the characteristics required to operate credibly at scale, favouring tokenised bank deposits instead.
  • Russia's emerging crypto regime could generate significant trading activity. Sberbank reportedly expects regulated crypto exchange trading to reach around $46 billion in its first year under the country's new rules.

🏢 Institutional Developments

  • Equity perpetuals are becoming a significant crypto trading category. Across Binance, Bybit, Bitget, MEXC and OKX, equity perps averaged $17.6 billion in daily volume in a recent sample, almost matching ETH at $18.2 billion. Weekday volumes reached $23.5 billion, while weekend activity fell to just 9.9% of weekday levels, showing that despite 24/7 availability, liquidity remains heavily concentrated around traditional equity market hours.
  • Strategy bought another 4,603 BTC for $369.7 million, taking its holdings to 845,050 BTC.
  • BitMine added another 53,501 ETH, continuing the rapid growth of its Ether treasury.
  • US spot Bitcoin ETFs accumulated $2.8 billion during an eight-session inflow streak before Friday's $202 million reversal, while Ethereum ETFs attracted $1.42 billion over nine trading sessions.
  • Charles Schwab said it plans to add SOL, AVAX and LINK to its crypto trading platform, expanding beyond BTC and ETH.
  • BitGo acquired NYDIG's institutional trading business, adding derivatives, financing and capital-markets capabilities.
  • Revolut began rolling out EURR, its euro-backed stablecoin, to selected European customers.
  • 39 US state banking associations formed the BankChain Alliance, targeting a shared blockchain for tokenised deposits, stablecoins and programmable settlement.

📆 What to Watch Next Week

  • US labour data takes centre stage, with JOLTS on Tuesday, ADP employment on Wednesday and the August jobs report on Friday, ahead of the Fed's September meeting.
  • US ISM manufacturing and services data will provide another read on growth and inflation pressures following Warsh's hawkish Jackson Hole message.
  • Token unlocks include SUI, TIA, ENA and several other projects during the week, adding potential supply pressure across selected altcoins.
